An Inside Look At A DQG Quilting Bee

“Ladies of the Evening” – A Sisterhood

This bee was started in 1984 by Glenda Dilbeck and was first known only as the Tuesday Night Bee.  About 7 years ago someone decided that each bee needed a name.  Because many of the members worked during the day and therefore had to meet in the evening, they decided to call themselves, Ladies of the Evening.

A core group of woman has been meeting for 18 years and many new faces have appeared since then.  When asked about past members there were many fond stories that began to emerge.  It was obvious that this bee was not only a place of sharing quilting but sharing lives.   In fact one member described the group as an extended family.  Another enthusiastically said “A Sisterhood”.  Another said, “When I joined this bee, that is when I really got to know people.”  Incidentally, there is rarely a quiet moment as several conversations are take place simultaneously.

This particular bee has been described as the bee of experience and knowledge.  If you want to find out something about quilting it is certain this group can help.  Many times a bee member will lay out their project in the middle of the floor to get ideas and opinions about how to proceed.  A bee is definitely a place for learning, teaching, and exchanging new ideas, tips and information.

Other things they do are periodic group block exchanges.  A pattern or theme is chosen by the group and then participating members make the appropriate number of blocks.  The blocks are brought to the bee and exchanged.  Amazingly the assembled quilt tops all look very different.  There is also an enthusiastic exchange of fat quarters as bee members return from a show or from vacation.   As we all know, quilters are especially generous.

I asked one veteran quilter if they ever got bored – the reply was “I have so many quilts in my mind that I have to live forever!”  Another veteran quilter said – “no matter how many quilts I make I will never be able to use my entire fabric stash.”
When asked to simply describe their bee:
SHARING – LEARNING – SOCIALIZING – SISTERHOOD
This bee meets the 4th Tuesday of each month 7pm – 9pm.
