Sowing Hope in Tanzania

Sowing Hope in Tanzania is a group of volunteer quilters who will be visiting Tanzania, Africa in July 2012. The group will teach women how to use modern tools for improved production in making quilts to sell locally.  The women in Tanzania currently make about $1.50 per day.  With the help of up-to-date tools and techniques, they can significantly increase their income to support their families.

The DQG is collecting tools and supplies that are normally not available to these women in their country.  This will enable them to continue to use the techniques they will be learning in their quilt-making.

There will be a table set up at the DQG meetings.  Hope Edwards will be available to answer questions and collect any of the notions that guild members want to donate.  The list includes: sewing thread, sewing needles, machine needles,  rotary cutters, rotary blade sharpener ,mat (no bigger than 24 “), rulers of all sizes, spring-loaded snip scissors, scissors, seam rippers straight pins, small battery flashlights, paper and markers, picnic table cloths for design walls, and embroidery floss. 

 

In order to raise funds for this trip, the group will be raffling 6-8 quilts to be drawn on May 30, 2012.  Tickets are $5 for 1 or $20 for 5.   Each quilt will be raffled separately.  There will be an open house to see these quilts on Sunday, February 12, from 1pm to 3pm at B&T’s Studio.  These quilts were made by Barb McCraw, Teresa Sherling, Hope Edwards, Elizabeth Kruger and Pat Bennett.  The quilting was done by Elizabeth Kruger, Fran Dornan, Beverly Stelick, and we are still looking for volunteers to quilt additional quilts for us.

Please help promote this effort to your friends, family and neighbors.  Look for news articles in the local papers.   Posters and flyers will be at the local quilt shops.
